AITA for Refusing to Let My Friend Borrow My Apartment for a Party?

A few weeks ago, my friend asked if she could use my apartment for a small birthday party with her friends. I explained that I was not comfortable with hosting a party at my place because I live alone, and my apartment is small and valuable to me. She was surprised and said that it would be a small gathering and nothing would go wrong.

I tried to be polite but firm, explaining that I prefer to keep my apartment private and safe. She insisted and became slightly upset, claiming that true friends should be more flexible and accommodating. I felt uneasy because I did not want to compromise my comfort and security for the sake of her expectations.

Over the next couple of days, I reflected on the situation. I realized that setting boundaries is important and that refusing is not the same as being a bad friend. True friendship respects personal space and decisions, even if they do not align with someone else’s desires.

Eventually, I communicated my perspective again, suggesting alternative venues for her party, such as renting a small hall or hosting at her place. She understood and appreciated the suggestion, and we maintained our friendship without tension. This experience taught me that being honest and setting limits is essential to maintaining respect and healthy relationships.
